Copenhagen Winter Jazz Festival

Posted 1 February 2012 by Smunk

Copenhagen invites you to get winter jazzy for the next two weeks!

The annual Copenhagen Winter Jazz festival has kick-off today and runs for two full weeks, with big and small jazz concerts all over Denmark.

One of the ideas behind the Winter Jazz festival is to put focus on all the dedicated jazz places all over Denmark, and to encourage different music venues to be more jazzy..

Most of the concerts are being held at small music venues and have free entries.

So get out there – support your local music café or bar and get jazzier! It will definitely keep you warm in the winter cold!

If you want to find out more, check out the program at: http://www.jazz.dk/

14 January: Winter Wonderland

12:00 – 22:00 // no entrance fee

For most people, January is the month where we all live on pasta and ketchup and trying to find as many free events as possible.

So here is a few of the events that Copenhagen offers you in the “no-money-month”

Until now, there has been no sign of snow in Denmark – luckily the new internet shop The Bonk will grand us some. Six tons of snow will be scattered all over Enghave Plads and a ski and snowboard competition will take place with the possibility of winning FREE STUFF!

And after the competition there will of course be an after-ski party.

See you all at Enghave Plads!

See event on facebook

And if that wasn’t enough snow for you, keep reading!

Every Friday night Toftegårds Plads in Valby invites you to “Disco On Ice” at the skate rink.

DJ Janus and DJ Walker will crank up the music and will be supported by a spectacular laser show. So brush of your old skates and we will see you Friday night!

Bitchslap magazine – one of the coolest independant magazines in the DK. If you don’t know it yet, I suggest you find a free copy in one of the hotspots they’re distributed to. Or even better – snatch a copy at the Bitchslap#14 release party.

Bitchslap, to me, is subculture, street, art, fashion, design, photography, music and coolness. Check it out.

At the party, there’ll be dj’s, a (supposedly) legendary dance competition, 20,- bar and free Tuborg Gold from 21:00 – 22:00.

See event on facebook.

13-26 November: Make Your Move-choreography workshop

10:00 – 13:00 // no entrance fee

It’s time to get out of your comfort zone!

The cross-cultural event Make Your Move is now running in Copenhagen and everyone is welcome to join.

In short Make Your Move is a competition in dance-choreography and stage art for 15-25 year-olds in Morocco and Denmark.

Professional choreographers give free master classes and at each workshop 2 talents are found. When all 5 workshops in Copenhagen have taken place, the 10 selected talents get a few weeks to make their choreography for the Make Your Move Award Show at Dansescenen, Copenhagen December 11th. Check out facebook for more information.

I have participated in one of the workshops already and I am very excited about the concept! Yes, it is scary to show the other participants what you have come up with in the short amount of time given at the workshop, but it is such a great feeling when you just let yourself go and start interpreting the music your own way.

So, if you are curious and feel like you have some kind of idea or inspiration in your head, please just show up and do it for the thrill of turning your imagination into movements. When you have come up with your interpretation of the song, you and the other participants will be split up in smaller groups and you start showing each other your work. Then you will get the chance to suggest a way of putting participants’ pieces together due to your idea of the mood, room and so on and this is the actual choreography work taking place. I felt so inspired when I left the workshop and I hope you will feel the same way. It is simply too cool to dare do something like this!

Go get your Wednesday-evening-cup-of-coffee at Kaffe and take a step back in time. This evening Kaffe provides you with the opportunity of recalling what’s so great about fiddling with plastic beads

(and this time it’s without the screaming kids and the smell of lunch boxes).

Kaffe will make sure that there is loads of wonderful, multicolored beads and all the other equipment needed.

All you have to do is stop by and rest your mind at the soothing game of putting beads together.
